Types of Surgery

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y):

The laparoscopic gastric bypass is the most commonly performed procedure for weight loss in the United States. The gastric bypass has undergone a steady evolution since 1950’s when the intestinal bypass was created. As obesity continued to grow along with the persistence of physicians in this field, the gastric bypass was designed as a much safer procedure.

Gastric Sleeve

Also called Sleeve Gastrectomy, the Gastric Sleeve is a restrictive procedure in which the size of the stomach is reduced to allow smaller amounts of food to be ingested at any given time. This procedure is performed laparoscopically, through small incisions and a camera.

Gastric Banding

The Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (or Lap Band) is a bariatric surgical procedure where a silicone belt is placed around the upper stomach through small incisions and the use of a small camera. This procedure is called restrictive, where the band limits the amount of food taken by the patient before he/she feels no desire to eat. The band is called adjustable since it has a balloon along its inner surface connected to a reservoir under the skin. Through this reservoir, fluid can be added to the balloon further restricting the passage of food through the band.

Gastric Band Adjustment/Fills

When the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (or Lap Band) procedure is complete, it will eventually become necessary for the patient to receive an adjustment fill. The patient is able to control the amount of weight loss by making the Lap Band looser or tighter. Dr. Miranda will work with you to customize your Lap Band fill for you to lose weight and to be comfortable at the same time.

Gastric Plication

This is a new procedure where the stomach size is reduced to hold much less volume than usual. The procedure entails placing stitches on the stomach folding it and without removal of stomach making this procedure fully reversible. In addition, as opposed to the gastric band, no foreign material is placed and no fills are needed. The cost is greatly reduced in view that no band or stapling is needed. The gastric plication is a new procedure, and great results are expected due to its minimal invasive nature and safe approach.

Revision Surgery

Bariatric Surgery Revision is performed on a patient previously operated and it's performed due to technique failure (either insufficient weight loss, excessive weight loss or excessive malabsorption, among other reasons). A revision surgery is evaluated on a case by case basis.
